2nd edition of ethereum.org Translatathon It’s in the book! This year we saw 327 contributors translate 2.53 million words into 70 languages. Let’s look at the details.

What is Translataton?

Translatathon is an annual translation competition aimed at increasing the amount of non-English Ethereum content.

Participation is open to anyone who is bilingual and no technical knowledge is required. During the Translatathon, participants can learn more about Ethereum while contributing to ethereum.org and competing for prizes.

  • 2 weeks to apply
  • 9 days of translation
  • 2-week quality evaluation

The goals were to get more translations in underrepresented languages, expand multilingual content, engage new contributors, and reward existing contributors.

Numbers: 2023 vs. 2024

How activity compares to last year Translatathon:

  • Active translators: 217 → 327 (50% increase)
  • Number of translated words: 1.47M → 2.53M (70% increase)
  • Translated language: 56 → 70 (25% increase)

We gave away $30,000 in prize money to 189 eligible participants. The top 10 translators also won Devcon tickets and discounts. Not bad!

What this means for ethereum.org

Translatathon will have a significant impact on the translated content available on ethereum.org! Here’s what to add to the site:

  • 1.35 million newly translated words
  • 3,173 pages added or updated in 55 languages.
  • Added 6 new languages ​​(English, English, Hausa, Shona, Tagalog, Yoruba)

With these additions, ethereum.org We will cover 68 non-English languages. Add English to this and you have content for approximately 5.5 billion users. Currently, around 67% of people in the world can start learning about Ethereum in their native language!

As part of the Translatathon, we created ETHGlossary, a new tool that turns Ethereum terminology into a multilingual adventure!

ETHGlossary gamifies Ethereum terminology in over 60 languages. You can vote for the best translations for key concepts and discuss why certain translations work (or don’t work)! During the translation period, we were delighted to have 84 contributors suggesting 6226 translations in 40 languages.

Our goal is to continue to iterate on ETHGlossary until it becomes a fully open source app that everyone can use and contribute to. We aim to revitalize the entire ecosystem by creating the best resource for Ethereum terminology in any language.

Getting together IRL

To bring translators together, we supported community-organized translation hubs in 11 countries. Over 100 people gathered together to have a great time translating and talking about all things Ethereum!
