The Ethereum Foundation’s 2024 Translatathon saw a 50% increase in contributors, translating 2.53 million words into 70 languages, expanding Ethereum’s global reach.

The Ethereum Foundation has successfully concluded its 2024 Translatathon, achieving an important milestone in its mission to make Ethereum content accessible in multiple languages. According to the Ethereum Foundation Blog, this year’s event saw 327 contributors translate 2.53 million words into 70 languages.

Understanding the Translatathon

Translatathon is an annual translation competition aimed at increasing the availability of non-English Ethereum content. Open to anyone who is bilingual, the event requires no technical expertise, allowing participants to learn about Ethereum while contributing to the platform and competing for prizes.

This event will be conducted in several stages, including 2 weeks of support, 9 days of translation, and 2 weeks of quality evaluation. The main goals are to strengthen translations for underrepresented languages, expand multilingual content, engage new contributors, and reward existing contributors.

impressive growth

The 2024 Translatathon saw a 50% increase in active translators compared to last year, from 217 to 327. The number of translated words increased by 70%, from 1.47 million to 2.53 million, and the number of translated languages increased by 25%. From 56 to 70.

The foundation distributed $30,000 in prize money to 189 eligible participants. The top 10 translators received additional rewards, including Devcon tickets and discounts.

Top Contributors and Influencers

Top contributors included MGETH, Jagadeesh, luniacllama, and others. Their efforts have significantly enriched the content of ethereum.org. We added 1.35 million newly translated words and updated 3,173 pages in 55 languages. Six new languages were introduced, including Akan Twi, Ewe, Hausa, Shona, Tagalog and Yoruba.

ETH Glossary and Community Participation

As part of the Translatathon, the Ethereum Foundation launched ETHGlossary, a tool designed to gamify the translation of Ethereum terms in over 60 languages. In this initiative, 84 contributors proposed 6,226 translations in 40 languages.

Translation hubs, community organizations in 11 countries, facilitated face-to-face gatherings, attracting over 100 participants to engage in translation activities and discussions about Ethereum.

future plans

While the 2024 Translatathon comes to a close, Ethereum’s translation program continues to thrive. The Foundation encourages more bilingual speakers to join efforts to expand the educational reach of Ethereum. A variety of contribution opportunities are available through Crowdin’s programming platform and community channels such as Discord.

The Ethereum Foundation would like to thank all participants, recognizing their role in making Ethereum a truly global platform.
