Ethereum’s roadmap explores solutions such as FOCIL and multi-proposer schemes to address issues such as short-term censorship and proposer latency advantages to improve blockchain efficiency.

Ethereum, one of the leading blockchain platforms, is solving critical challenges in the transaction supply chain that impact the economic efficiency of the ecosystem. According to a16z crypto, the focus is on addressing short-term censorship and proposer latency advantages through innovative solutions such as FOCIL and multi-proposer schemes.

Solving short-term censorship issues

The current Ethereum model gives a single proposer exclusive control over transaction inclusion, which can lead to short-term censorship. This occurs when a proponent motivated by off-chain incentives chooses to exclude certain transactions for personal gain. This behavior can reduce the efficiency of decentralized finance (DeFi) applications where transaction timing is critical.

FOCIL, a constrained single-proposer architecture, offers a potential solution. This includes inclusion committees that enforce censorship resistance by enforcing the inclusion of certain transactions. By implementing conditional inclusion lists, Ethereum aims to make attackers think it is economically difficult to exclude transactions.

Proposer Latency Benefits

In a single-proposer system, the proposer acts last in the block generation game and can therefore react to new information faster than other participants. This advantage can lead to market inefficiencies because proposers can submit transactions that reflect the current state better than competing users.

Multi-proposer approaches offer a promising alternative by distributing authority across multiple proposers, thereby reducing individual latency benefits. In this setup, multiple validators propose transactions and the protocol aggregates them into a single block, creating a more level playing field.

the way forward

The choice between FOCIL and multi-proposer plans will depend on Ethereum’s long-term vision. Focusing on short-term censorship resistance allows the implementation of limited single-proposer designs such as FOCIL. Alternatively, if addressing market inefficiencies caused by single-proposer approaches is a priority, a move to a multi-proposer architecture may be necessary.

Although both solutions are still under development, they represent important steps toward enhancing Ethereum’s capabilities and maintaining its position as a leading blockchain platform. As Ethereum continues to evolve, these innovations will play a key role in shaping its future landscape.
