Blob transaction fees on Ethereum witnessed an unprecedented surge yesterday with the launch of “BlobScriptions”.

Blob represents a new transaction type that alleviates layer 2 fees on the Ethereum network and was introduced with the Dencun upgrade. The minimum gas price for a blob to be included in an Ethereum block from the beginning was 1WEI, which is approximately $0.01.

However, this fee experienced an incredible surge of over 10,000% yesterday, reaching almost $300 following the introduction of BlobScriptions by Ethscriptions.

As of press time, average blob fees have fallen to about $6.57, or 13.97 gwei, according to the Dune Analytics dashboard curated by Dragonfly analyst Hildobby.

What is BlobScription?

Similar to Bitcoin Inscriptions, BlobScriptions allow network users to inscribe NFT-like assets, including images, text, and tokens, into blobs on Ethereum.

Alex Thorn, head of research at Galaxy Digital said:

“Ethereum created a special place where they lowered fees to encourage certain types of transactions (blobs), and people started putting jpgs in there.”

Tom Lehman, founder of Ethscriptions, who operated under the pseudonym “Middlemarch” on urge The community sees an opportunity to “escribe something big” on the network, emphasizing that “Blob is now essentially free.”

As of press time, more than 1,000 inscriptions had been etched into the stain over the past four hours, according to data from Dune Analytics.

In particular, the proliferation of these assets has led to significant stagnation in blob transactions, leading to fierce competition for space within Ethereum blocks. As a result, the number of pending blobs in blocks surged by more than 3,700%, and blob space utilization reached 100%, based on Ethernow data.

What does this mean for your network?

Different stakeholders have different opinions on how BlobScriptions could affect the operations of Ethereum.

Developer Daniel, gave an opinion The proliferation of these assets could cause layer 2 network transaction fees to skyrocket.

According to him:

“Ethereum is already very congested, so don’t play around with blob inscriptions, which can cause your layer 2 transaction fees to skyrocket. A few bytes of data take up 128kb of storage space, wasting a lot of on-chain resources.”

However, Christine Kim, a researcher at Galaxy Digital, explained that the current trend is unsustainable. she said:

“(BlobScriptions) cause blob fees to grow exponentially. This eventually makes it uneconomical to maintain spam blob space with inscriptions, freeing up blob space once again for economically valuable activities such as l2 DA.” You can do it.”
