Businesses around the world are facing massive IT outages after a software update from cybersecurity firm Crowdstrike went haywire, causing thousands of Windows-based IT systems and endpoints that had downloaded the update to stop working.

Affected systems have reportedly encountered a “blue screen of death” (BSOD), after which they reboot and are unable to function properly. Image appear You may have seen BSODs displayed on airport arrival and departure boards on social media.

The cause was an update to the company’s Falcon Sensor security product, and Crowdstrike is reportedly working to roll back the faulty update. SubredditA workaround has been posted by the administrator, but it still needs to be implemented manually on each system individually.

Crowdstrike President and CEO George Kurtz released a statement to X amid the ongoing outage, saying that Crowdstrike is “actively working with customers impacted by a flaw discovered in a single content update on Windows hosts. Mac and Linux hosts are not impacted.”

“This is not a security incident or cyberattack. The issue has been identified, isolated, and a fix has been deployed. We are directing customers to our support portal for the latest updates and will continue to provide complete and ongoing updates on our website,” Kurtz added.

Polygon CISO Moodit Gupta As specified in X Polygon uses Crowdstrike technology, but “we haven’t been affected because we don’t roll out non-critical updates to our staff before testing.”
