Fox Corporation announced a significant upgrade to its verification beta by switching to a proprietary zero-knowledge (ZK) blockchain using Polygon’s (MATIC) chain development kit (CDK). According to Polygon Technology, this move makes Fox Corporation the first company to launch ZK-based Ethereum Layer 2 (L2).

Time as the first external partner

In a notable development, TIME will become the first external media company to utilize Verification Protocol for content licensing and verification. The partnership aims to build a technological and cryptographic bridge to AI platforms, opening up new commercial opportunities for publishers.

Content registration and verification

The verification protocol, developed by Fox Corporation’s Emerging Technology team with implementation support from Gelato, is designed to prove the origin of registered media. Initially built on Polygon PoS, the beta version already has over 106,000 articles and over 300,000 pieces of content registered.

End consumers can verify the origin of content through open protocols, as demonstrated in the beta app verify.fox. The verification team plans to launch open-source smart contracts to enable publishers of all sizes to license their content to AI companies.

Improved capacity and adoption

The transition to a dedicated ZK chain is expected to increase on-chain content registration capacity, eliminating resource contention on Polygon PoS. This upgrade improves the overall efficiency of the verification protocol, with a particular focus on content proof and provenance.

The verification protocol is open source and developers are invited to contribute or fork the source code, which is available on GitHub. Originally developed in-house by Fox’s Emerging Technology team, the protocol will now leverage Gelato to implement a proprietary chain using the Polygon CDK.

future prospects

In the future, validations can be connected to AggLayer to join a horizontally scalable, interoperable chain network for seamless cross-chain message passing. This can further improve the protocol’s functionality and integration with other blockchain ecosystems.

Fox Corporation initially launched a private beta of Verification in August 2023. Since then, more than 300,000 pieces of content from a variety of Fox-related brands, including Fox News, Fox Business, Fox Sports and Fox TV affiliates, have signed up for verification. With TIME joining as its first external publisher, the platform is ready to expand its reach and usefulness.
