The Federal Trade Commission (FTC) has taken decisive action to combat the growing threat of deepfake technology, proposing updated regulations to protect consumers from AI-based impersonation scams.

Addressing the risk of deepfakes

The FTC recognizes the growing danger of deepfakes and aims to strengthen rules prohibiting the use of artificial intelligence to impersonate companies or government agencies. This bill is intended to protect consumers from fraudulent activities facilitated through generative artificial intelligence (GenAI) platforms.

Strengthening consumer protection

The proposed update would allow the FTC to initiate federal court proceedings directly to force fraudsters to repay funds obtained through fraudulent impersonation schemes. The FTC aims to quickly address AI-based fraud targeting both individuals and businesses by strengthening its enforcement capabilities.

regulations finalized

The final rule on government and corporate impersonation is expected to become effective 30 days after publication in the Federal Register. Stakeholders will have the opportunity to provide comprehensive input on the regulatory framework by providing feedback during a 60-day public comment period.

Solving the deepfake problem

Deepfake technology poses serious challenges to regulators and lawmakers. Although there is a lack of federal law specifically addressing the creation and propagation of deepfakes, proactive steps are being taken to mitigate the risks. The FCC’s recent ban on AI-generated robocalls highlights the urgency of addressing deepfake-related threats.

the path ahead

As the FTC strengthens regulations to combat deepfake fraud, collaboration between stakeholders, including government agencies, technology companies, and legislators, remains critical. Effective enforcement and ongoing vigilance are essential to protecting consumer trust and security in an increasingly digital environment.

1. Becoming a victim of fraud can be shocking.

A reminder that no one will notify that person. @FTC They’ll give you your badge number, ask you to verify your Social Security number, ask you how much money you have in your bank account, connect you to a CIA agent, or send you a text message out of the blue.
