The momentum for open-source generated AI is strong, but upon closer analysis, the reality is different. Open-source generated AI faces enormous funding challenges. When it comes to large-scale foundational models, only large corporations like Databricks, Snowflake, and Meta, or well-funded startups like Mistral, are matching the performance of large-scale closed models. While most releases from other labs like Databricks and Snowflake are focused on optimizing enterprise workloads, much of the recent open source research is focused on complementary technologies rather than new models.
