As the cryptocurrency bull market heats up, newbie cryptocurrency users and old timers alike are struggling to keep up with the ever-changing narrative each week. But Gabby Dizon, co-founder and CEO of Yield Guild Games, doesn’t buy into the whole “chase narrative” strategy.

“I don’t believe in chasing narratives,” Dizon told Hall of Flame at the YGG Play Summit in the Philippines.

“Of course, there’s also the story that you’re a follower, like people who are late to the meme. I participate in a small way to understand the thinking of people trading memecoins, but I don’t trade in a serious way,” he says.

Dizon remains “convinced” that sooner or later the narrative will “turn the spotlight” back to the Web3 gaming industry.

“We have to be ready when that happens,” he says.

YGG is a decentralized autonomous organization (DAO) formed in 2021 that focuses on coordinating players around the world to earn rewards in Play-to-Earn games.

Dizon, who comes from a background as a game developer in the traditional gaming space, got into blockchain gaming after “fiddling with Ethereum and smart contracts in 2017” and discovering NFTs in 2018.

Dizon wanted to be an early innovator in Web3 games because he felt he had missed the boat when he jumped into Web2 mobile free-to-play games in 2014.

“I started my gaming company in 2014, but the market was already halfway through. I felt like I was already starting to mature and it was too late. I should have gone earlier,” says Dizon.

What brought Gabby Dizon to X fame?

Dizon has had an

“So from 2008 to 2018, I had a total of 2,000 followers.” he laughed.

Dizon explains that everything changed in 2018 when he started “posting a lot about NFTs.”

“2018 and 2019 were not that significant, but the market started to recover in 2020 and that’s when the number of followers started to increase,” he says.

He said it was like a domino effect. His follower count soared 40-fold, a surge that any memecoin trader would envy.

“As people became interested in NFTs, they also started to become interested in Web3 games, which got up to 80,000 in the bull market of 2021,” he says.

Dizon humbly admits that he “just posts stuff that interests a lot of people.”

Dizon currently has 137,800 followers on X, but says having a large following brings a lot of unnecessary stress.

“It’s quite strange to become kind of famous on Twitter because you used it like a normal person,” he says.

He jokingly admits to thinking, “Oh my gosh, what did I post six years ago, is it going to get canceled today?”

“I don’t remember deleting anything,” he said with a laugh. “But I haven’t looked at everything either. “I was just wondering if I had posted something particularly stupid,” he added.

What content does Gabby Dizon provide?

“I really just post what I think about the market,” Dizon says.

“We post a lot of support for the games we collaborate with YGG Sports. I would say we post less about NFTs in general and more about the games.”

From time to time, you’ll see Dizon dropping subtle hints that his teenage son has a cryptocurrency inclination.

As the cryptocurrency industry continues to grow, it is becoming increasingly difficult for key opinion leaders to cover all aspects, forcing them to narrow their focus further, Dizon says.

“In 2020, 2021, there was a very small space to see everything that was happening in cryptocurrency,” says Dizon.

“I was doing DeFi, NFTs, gaming (…). Now that everything is so much bigger, I’m much more specialized in gaming and the ecosystem around it,” he adds.

Predictions for Gabby Dizon?

Dizon believes that with all the hype surrounding the cryptocurrency market, gaming use cases are equally optimistic for next year.

“You’re going to see games consistently reaching over a million players a month,” Dizon predicted, admitting that “we’re trying to be conservative right now because it’s a big jump.”

(X/Gabby Dizon)

“Probably the best cryptocurrency game currently has 100,000 gamers per month,” he says.

He points out that some of the “world’s best games” now have “tens of millions,” if not “100 million users.”

Dizon also predicts that gamers will “interact more with the asset side and maybe even transact more.”
