GitHub now offers a free Foundations certification to students verified through GitHub Education to foster the development of collaboration and version control skills.

According to GitHub’s official blog, GitHub has announced an important initiative to support students by waiving the GitHub Foundations certification exam fee for those verified through GitHub Education. This move is part of GitHub’s ongoing effort to help students develop collaboration, version control, and other essential software development practical skills without financial burden.

GitHub Basics Authentication

The GitHub Foundations certification program is tailored for users who are new to the GitHub platform and focuses on core concepts such as repository management, commits, branches, merges, and project management. It also covers contributions to open source projects and the use of Markdown. More information about the curriculum can be found on GitHub’s education platform, which offers a wide range of pathways for learners.

How to get started

Step 1: Get verified

The GitHub Student Developer Pack is available to students ages 13 and older enrolled in a degree or diploma-granting course. Verification involves completing an application on GitHub’s training page and proving current registration. The process is simple as guidance is provided throughout the entire process.

Step 2: Prepare for the exam

The exam covers the basic topics of collaborating and working on GitHub. Preparation resources, including study guides and FAQs, are available through the GitHub Foundations Experience. Students can review these materials before taking the test.

Step 3: Take the test

Students can sign up for unproctored exams through PSI, GitHub’s testing provider. Tests are available 24 hours a day, 365 days a year and can be taken at the student’s convenience within 60 days of registration. If students are unable to complete the exam within this period, they may cancel without penalty.

Step 4: Get your credentials

Upon passing the exam, students receive a digital badge from Credly, which can be shared on platforms such as LinkedIn or Facebook to boost their professional profile.

Join the GitHub Education Community

GitHub Education offers more than just certification. Verified students have access to tools like GitHub Copilot for AI-powered coding suggestions and a GitHub Pro account with advanced features. Additionally, students engage with the global community and participate in events such as hackathons and GitHub Field Days to enrich their learning experience.
