GitHub has released the latest data release from Innovation Graph, covering the second and third quarters of 2024. This release provides valuable insight into open software development activities and highlights trends and developments within the open source community. According to GitHub, Innovation Graph is designed to make GitHub data more accessible to researchers, policymakers, and developers.
Innovation Graph: A Look Back
Innovation Graph has seen steady growth since its inception, with the number of stars in its GitHub repository increasing. The star chart highlights important open source events that have influenced these numbers. Despite these ‘new numbers’ not yet attracting venture capitalist attention, GitHub remains optimistic about Graph’s usefulness and future growth potential.
Data disclosure and academic insights
GitHub has continuously released data over the five quarters since launch, with each release contributing to a small increase in the number of stars in the repository. A recent study published on arXiv found that major releases of open source software packages are associated with greater adoption increases than minor updates, leading GitHub to consider strategic adjustments to its release strategy.
Academic papers have also used innovation graphs to explore various aspects of open source software. Specifically, the economic value of open source software is estimated at $8.8 trillion, and research shows that GitHub Copilot has shifted the focus of open source maintainers toward more coding work and less project management.
Conferences and Publications
The Innovation Graph has been featured prominently in numerous conferences and publications, including influential outlets such as The Economist and Rest of World. To support data journalists, GitHub plans to introduce year-over-year growth charts on its Innovation Graph site.
Report and future ambitions
GitHub continues to contribute to major reports such as the WIPO Global Innovation Index and the Stanford AI Index report. Additionally, two new surveys are introduced to better understand the composition and motivation of the open source community. As we move into 2025, GitHub aims to strengthen collaboration and expand the evidence base demonstrating the impact of open source software.
