Google announced the launch of new AI tools for Google Workspace for Education, including the introduction of Gemini to improve the learning experience for teenage students. According to blog.google, this move is part of Google’s broader efforts to make AI useful in educational settings and beyond.

Empowering Teens to Learn Responsibly with Gemini

Gemini, Google’s new AI tool, is designed to prepare teens with the skills and tools they need to succeed in a future where generative AI (GenAI) will play a critical role. Gemini provides guided support, immediate assistance, practice materials and real-time feedback with the goal of building students’ confidence and creativity.

Last year, Google introduced the Gemini Accountability experience for teens using personal Google Accounts. This plan was developed in consultation with child safety and development experts to ensure safety and reliability. Building on this foundation, we’ve continued to work with learning science experts and youth advisory panels to improve the safety and effectiveness of our tools.

Enhanced safety measures and data protection

Google is committed to additional data protection for all of our education users, ensuring that chat data is not used to improve AI models. This initiative is part of Google’s efforts to responsibly provide AI technologies to students.

In the coming months, Gemini will be available to young adult students who have a Google Workspace for Education account and meet Google’s minimum age requirements. This service is available free of charge to all educational institutions in over 100 countries. To maintain control, Gemini is disabled by default for youth until their school administrator enables it through the Admin console.

Features for a safe and effective learning experience

Google has implemented several features to provide young students with a responsible and useful experience.

  • Gemini is tuned to identify and prevent the display of inappropriate content, such as illegal or age-restricted substances.
  • The tool includes a double-check response feature that validates your answers by cross-referencing content from across the web and promotes information literacy and critical thinking skills.
  • ConnectSafely and FOSI-approved AI Literacy videos are included in the youth-friendly onboarding process and provide tips for responsible use of AI.
  • Learning Coach, a customized version of Gemini by LearnLM, provides step-by-step study guidance and practice activities such as quizzes and games.
  • Extensions to OpenStax and Data Commons provide information from trusted sources to aid student learning.

These initiatives reflect Google’s ongoing commitment to responsibly integrating AI into education, giving students the tools and knowledge they need for an AI-driven future.
