Starknet contributors Herodotus and StarkWare have unveiled the Cairo Verifier, a system that verifies cryptographic proofs at Layer 2 itself rather than on the Ethereum mainnet.
Cairo Verifier allows developers to implement verifiable computations at Starknet Layer 2 using STARK, an attestation type developed by Starkware, allowing apps running at Layer 3 to use it for security.
It also aims to address key issues such as high verification costs and latency issues that can typically limit the deployment of layer 3 applications on Starknet.
According to the developers, this opens the door to further scaling layer 3 application-specific blockchains on Starknet.
How does it work?
Currently, Starknet’s verification process involves ‘SHARP’ provers and verifiers submitting cryptographic proofs to L1 Ethereum. These proofs are then verified at the L1, ensuring the security of Starknet-based dapps.
The Cairo validator extends STARK’s security to Layer 3 to enable proof verification on Starknet and is scheduled to be released in the coming weeks.
“We have a working prototype of the Cairo Verifier scheduled for release in the coming weeks,” said Kacper Koziol, co-founder of Herodotus.
Starknet contributors are working to create a layer 3 application-specific blockchain network, each tailored to their specific needs. These dedicated blockchains offer the flexibility to customize elements such as hash functions and consensus mechanisms.
