The Hong Kong Monetary Authority has warned the public about phishing messages involving WeChat Pay Hong Kong Limited.

The Hong Kong Monetary Authority (HKMA) has issued an urgent warning to the public about phishing messages related to WeChat Pay Hong Kong Limited. According to a press release from WeChat Pay Hong Kong Limited, the phishing messages are targeting Stored Value Facility (SVF) users.

Details of phishing threats

The HKMA stressed that the fraudulent messages were designed to extract personal information and account credentials from unsuspecting victims. In its advisory, the HKMA stressed the importance of not responding to such messages and urged individuals who had already provided sensitive information or conducted financial transactions in response to such messages to take immediate action.

Steps for Affected Individuals

Anyone who suspects that they have been subjected to a phishing scam is advised to contact the relevant SVF licensee immediately. The HKMA also recommends reporting the incident to the police or contacting the police’s Anti-Fraud Coordination Centre on 18222.

Official answers and advice

The HKMA’s warning follows an official report from WeChat Pay Hong Kong Limited, which has been cooperating with authorities to mitigate the impact of phishing attempts. The HKMA continues to closely monitor the situation and advises the public to remain vigilant against these cybersecurity threats.
