Public warning against fake news
The Hong Kong Monetary Authority (HKMA) has issued a warning to the public about fraudulent activities falsely attributed to the circulation and organization of fake news. According to the Hong Kong Monetary Authority, there are reports of misinformation related to poverty alleviation projects.
Fraudulent Claims Exposed
The misleading information included claims that the individual leading the project was meeting with HKMA’s Chief Executive Officer Eddie Yue to discuss poverty alleviation funds. HKMA has categorically stated that these claims are unfounded and entirely fictitious.
Fraudulent activity has been identified
In a related scam, scammers posing as HKMA employees approached individuals claiming to manage the distribution of poverty funds. These scammers are said to have requested funds to “activate” accounts needed to receive aid. The HKMA has made it clear that its staff will not engage in such activities or solicit personal financial information from the public.
Legal action and public consultation
In response to these fraud claims, the HKMA reported the incident to the Hong Kong Police for further investigation. Authorities urge anyone who suspects fraudulent activity to contact their local law enforcement or Commercial and Technical Crime Hotline on 2860 5012.
