The Hong Kong Monetary Authority (HKMA) has issued a warning to the public about a series of fraudulent websites and internet banking login screens impersonating China CITIC Bank International Limited. The warning was issued after reports of these fraudulent platforms were reported to the HKMA, according to a press release from the authority.
Fraud activity details
The HKMA highlighted that these scam groups are attempting to lure users into providing sensitive personal and financial information. Authorities emphasize that legitimate banks, including China CITIC Bank, do not send emails or SMS with hyperlinks directing users to their websites to conduct transactions. We also never ask for sensitive information such as login passwords or one-time passwords via phone, email, or SMS.
public consultation
Members of the public who may have unintentionally shared personal information or transacted through these fraudulent websites are advised to contact China CITIC Bank immediately using the official contact information provided in HKMA’s press release. Individuals are also encouraged to report incidents to the Hong Kong Police Crime Branch Information Center at 2860 5012.
precautions
HKMA continues to remind consumers to remain vigilant against these scams. It is important to verify the authenticity of any communication purporting to be from your bank and not to click on any suspicious links. The agency provides resources and information on its website to help consumers identify and avoid scammers.
