In a landmark decision, Prospera ZEDE, a special economic zone in Roatan, Honduras, has officially adopted Bitcoin (BTC) as its unit of account. This significant move, announced on January 5, 2024 by Jorge Colindres, Acting Administrator of Prospera ZEDE and Commissioner of Taxation, marks a significant step forward in integrating cryptocurrencies into the mainstream financial system.
Less than two years after declaring Bitcoin a fiat currency, this latest development allows entities in the zone to use Bitcoin to measure the market value of goods and services. It symbolizes the shift towards financial freedom for individuals and businesses, giving them the freedom to conduct transactions, conduct accounting and file taxes in the currency of their choice.
However, this transition is not without complexity. Initially, the tax liabilities of businesses that choose Bitcoin will be calculated in BTC but reported in US dollars or Honduran lempiras. This temporary measure arises due to technical limitations of Prospera’s eGovernance system and external regulatory issues. The ultimate goal, Colindres stated, is to implement a “final BTC tax payment process” that will allow businesses to report and pay their tax liabilities directly in Bitcoin once existing issues are resolved.
Entities interested in adopting Bitcoin as a unit of account must formally notify the Prospera Tax Committee within 30 days of the relevant tax period and refer to the following approved cryptocurrency exchanges: coinbase Or use Kraken.
Founded in May 2020 on the northern island of Roatan, Prospera ZEDE has been a pioneer in integrating cryptocurrency within economic structures. The adoption of Bitcoin as a legal tender in April 2022, followed by the recent recognition of Bitcoin as a unit of account, positions Prospera as a pioneering force in the cryptocurrency space. Additionally, Prospera’s advancements are not limited to cryptocurrency adoption, but have also fueled significant economic growth. During its three years of operation, the region reportedly attracted more than $100 million in investments and created more than 3,000 jobs, underscoring its role as a competitive system in Latin America.
