The Hong Kong Monetary Authority (HKMA) has issued a warning about fraudulent websites impersonating The Hongkong and Shanghai Banking Corporation Limited, urging caution and providing safety tips.

HKMA warns public about fraudulent websites

The Hong Kong Monetary Authority (HKMA) has issued a warning to the public about a fraudulent website misrepresenting The Hongkong and Shanghai Banking Corporation Limited (HSBC). As stated in HSBC’s recent press release, these websites have been reported to the HKMA.

In its advisory, the HKMA highlights the importance of being vigilant against scams that seek to trick customers into providing sensitive personal information. Authorities emphasize that legitimate banks, including HSBC, do not send SMS or emails containing hyperlinks directing users to perform transactions. Additionally, avoid requesting sensitive information, such as login credentials or one-time passwords, through these means.

Public Safety Measures and Recommendations

The HKMA advises individuals who have interacted with these fraudulent websites or provided personal information to contact their bank immediately using the official contact details provided by HSBC. Affected individuals are also encouraged to report the incident to law enforcement by contacting the Hong Kong Police Crime Branch Information Centre.

This warning serves as a reminder to the public to exercise caution and verify the authenticity of communications purporting to be from financial institutions. The HKMA continues to work closely with banks to ensure public safety and mitigate risks associated with online fraud.

Additional context

The rise of digital banking has led to an increase in online fraud attempts, leading financial institutions and regulators around the world to strengthen cybersecurity measures. In recent years, banks have invested heavily in technology and public awareness campaigns to combat this threat.

For more information on these warnings and precautions, the public is encouraged to visit the HKMA official website. The HKMA is committed to protecting the financial system and protecting consumers from fraudulent activities.

Please visit the HKMA website for the official announcement.
