According to a recent press release, the Hong Kong Monetary Authority (HKMA) has issued an urgent warning regarding instant message phishing targeting customers of China Construction Bank (Asia) Corporation Limited. The purpose of the warning is to protect the public from fraudulent activities reported to the HKMA.
Phishing alert details
Phishing attempts include instant messages that trick recipients into providing sensitive personal information or conducting financial transactions. The HKMA emphasized that banks will never send SMS or emails containing hyperlinks directing customers to their website for transactions. Additionally, the bank does not request personal information such as login password or one-time password (OTP) through phone, email, or SMS.
Recommended Actions for Affected Individuals
Individuals who have inadvertently provided personal information or conducted transactions in response to such phishing messages are encouraged to immediately contact China Construction Bank (Asia) using the contact details provided in the official press release. Affected individuals should also report the incident to the Hong Kong Police Crime Branch Information Center at 2860 5012.
precautions
To prevent these scams, the HKMA advises the public to be cautious of unsolicited messages and to verify the authenticity of all communications received from financial institutions. We recommend that you contact your bank directly through official contact channels rather than using links or contact details contained in suspicious messages.
