Ethereum founder Vitalik Buterin advised people to “decentralize security” after participating in a Twitter debate about the use of cold wallets.
To prove his point, Buterin said he keeps 90% of his cryptocurrency funds in multi-secure wallets.
“M-of-N, you hold some keys, but not enough to block recovery. The rest are held by others you trust,” he wrote. “Don’t reveal who those people are, not even to each other.”
The mentioned “m-of-n” Buterin explains one of the ways you can set up a multi-signature or multi-signature wallet. The first variable represents the minimum number of signatures required to sign a contract to spend or transfer funds from your wallet. The second variable represents the total number of possible signers present in the wallet.
The conversation began after research with the developer, who uses a pseudonym. 0xnosebleed On Twitter, he urged cryptocurrency traders to think about how devastating it would be to lose all their money and prevent it by investing in cold storage.
“Your hardware wallet will become your fortress of solitude,” Kofi wrote. “It will allow you to sleep peacefully at night. It will protect you so you can survive long enough to win this game.”
However, not everyone believes this is the right way to protect their personal cryptocurrency stash. Peter Watts, CEO of Uneven Labs and founder of Reservoir, a developer platform for launching NFT collections, highlighted the risks associated with relying on hardware wallets.
“When you use a hardware wallet, the biggest risk you have is yourself,” he said, adding that someone could discover the personal seed phrase you’ve hidden away, or that it’s so secure that you can’t retrieve it yourself.
That’s when Buterin comes in to explain how to make sure your cold storage wallet isn’t a single point of failure for security.
Safe (formerly Gnosis Safe) multi-signature wallet has often been seen as a product to help DAOs and other groups manage shared vaults, but there are many individuals using it in a manner similar to Buterin.
