What should I consider when adding a guardian to my digital vault?
Now you’re ready to assign Guardians who can help you recover your Vault in the event of an accident, such as losing your phone. Your Guardians circle will typically consist of:
- Trusted people in your family or friend network, such as your spouse/partner, close friend, or parent; and/or
- Additional devices that have Vault12 Guard installed and are fully under the user’s control (e.g.
- Tablet with iOS or Android installed
- Additional or backup smartphone,
- Macbook with M series processor,
- Even an older iPod touch can be a useful tool for backup.
Consider who your guardian should be. Keep in mind that for maximum resiliency, the guardian and the devices they use should be regularly online for automatic backup safety checks. Unlike offline backups, such as paper copies that are not easily verifiable, Vault12 Guard automatically checks the availability of configured backup devices on a regular basis and signals when it is recommended to re-verify a guardian device that has been out of commission (offline) for an extended period of time.
at last, At least 3 guardians are required Complete the recommended setup plan. But don’t hesitate and start adding Guardian candidates right away. You can add more Guardians later or change individual Guardians that you’ve previously specified. This is if you later realize that they aren’t the best fit or decide to change/upgrade one of your additional protection devices (e.g. iPad).
Why is the default setting 2 out of 3 Guardians?
“There isAdvanced“On the Guardian Settings screen, you can click the button to change the number of Guardians required, but we recommend sticking with the default settings when creating your first Vault.
- A total of 3 Guardians is recommended, with 2 Guardians checking and restoring the Vault. This will provide resilience in case one of the Guardians becomes unresponsive.
The simplest Guardian configuration to use is one trusted person (e.g. spouse) and two spare devices (e.g. iPad and Macbook) that you control. This allows you to control recovery even if your trusted person is unresponsive. This is because you can meet the 2/3 verification for restoring a Vault using two spare devices configured as Guardians. Also, based on this 2/3 verification setup, you are not at risk if one of the individual Guardians or devices becomes corrupted or fails. This type of setup provides a careful balance of control, convenience, security, and fault tolerance.

As mentioned above, there are two ways to add new Guardians.
- Invite someone you trust among your close colleagues
- Register your trusted device.
The steps for enrolling a trusted person or device in Vault12 Guard are the same: identify the guardian name, choose the type, and then “pair” the Vault12 Guard app on the Vault owner’s device and the guardian’s device. The only difference is how you choose to do it: locally, with a spare device in hand, or with a living guardian (locally or remotely).
It’s a good idea to first familiarize yourself with the process of setting up a Guardian device by registering your own spare device as a Guardian. Once you’re comfortable with the process and can confidently walk through the steps, it’ll be a lot more fun to register a family member or friend as a Guardian.
