Meta’s photo-sharing app Instagram today launched an AI-powered background editing feature called Wallpapers. The generative AI tool, currently limited to users based in the United States, leverages Meta’s in-house Emu Edit technology.
Meta said in the announcement that wallpapers are more than just color filters and basic adjustments.

“Backgrounds allow you to reconfigure the background of an image with just a few taps and a prompt, like ‘Chased by dinosaurs’ or ‘Surrounded by dogs,’ to create a completely new image to fit your story.” Ahmad Al-Dahle, head of generative AI at Meta, posted on Threads, a Meta competitor on Twitter.
“To get started, press the wallpaper button at the top of a new story,” Al-Dahle elaborates. “And once you publish, a ‘Try It Out’ sticker will appear when you share the created image, making it even easier for your friends to use the wallpaper for the first time.”
This tool is designed for simplicity while leveraging cutting-edge technology. Users will see a variety of suggested prompts, such as ‘On the Red Carpet’, and will also be given the option to create their own unique prompts.
Meta appears to be using AI to boost the confidence and creativity of those who post photos, but it’s also inspiring others to try the feature, driving more usage and engagement.
Social platforms are rapidly infusing AI into their apps. Snapchat recently introduced a similar AI-based feature.
This is just another chip Meta has invested in AI as a business strategy. Mark Zuckerbeg’s transition from the metaverse to AI was marked by major involvement in open source communities and the launch of generative AI features for Whatsapp and Facebook Messenger. Meta also recently launched its “Imagine with Meta” AI image generator, which uses EMU but is available as a standalone website.
Meta’s expansion of Threads, announced by Mark Zuckerberg, today expands to more European countries, marking another important milestone in Meta’s global strategy. The expansion of Threads and AI-powered capabilities across the Meta platform demonstrates the company’s vision for an AI-enhanced and globally connected future.
And that vision certainly looks more exciting than the Metaverse with its Bhandari cartoon avatar.
