Kabos, the Shiba Inu who gained attention as the face of the iconic “Doge” meme that inspired the creation of Dogecoin, passed away peacefully today at the age of 17.
Her owner, Atsuko Sato, announced the news on her official blog, thanking Kabo-chan for the love and support she has shown over the years. A farewell party for Kabosu worshipers is being held at Flower Kaori in Kotsunomori, Narita City, on May 26.
The cryptocurrency community and Kabosu’s fans expressed their condolences by sharing tributes and cherished memories of the dog who became an internet legend.
It was in 2010 that Cabosu’s image received attention. The skeptical and curious expression of the adopted dog, Kabos, recorded by Sato went viral, giving rise to the “Doji” meme. Often paired with funny phrases in broken English and an equally irreverent Comic Sans font, these images have become a cornerstone of internet culture.
The popularity of this meme led to the creation of Dogecoin 2013, a cryptocurrency forked from Litecoin, a fork of Bitcoin. Litecoin and Dogecoin both use the Scrypt hashing algorithm for their proof-of-work consensus mechanism, allowing miners to mine both coins simultaneously.
As envisioned by Jackson Palmer, Dogecoin was intended as a “joke” coin, but it gained popularity and raised funds for charity. In 2021, it hit an all-time high of $0.73 after a pump rally influenced by Reddit’s r/WallStreetBets community.
As of this writing, Dogecoin (DOGE) has fallen 5% in the last 24 hours and is currently trading at $0.15. Kabosu’s influence goes beyond Dogecoin and has inspired a whole category of dog-themed meme coins, including Shiba Inu (SHIB), Floki Inu (FLOKI), and Dogwifhat (WIF).
The broader dog-themed coin market is also reeling from the impact, with listings for such coins on CoinGecko down an average of 5% compared to the previous day. The community appears to collectively mourn Kabosu’s death.
The legacy of Kabosu, the symbol of cryptocurrency culture and Dogecoin, will continue to inspire the cryptocurrency community.
Cheer up, Cabo-chan.
