  • Sports betting has expanded rapidly in the United States since a 2018 Supreme Court ruling that allowed states to regulate sports betting within their respective borders.
  • Among the states best known for casinos in the United States is Nevada, home to the famous city of Las Vegas.
  • Outside the United States, Macau is another destination experiencing a surge in sports betting activity.

Nevada and Macau, two global gaming powerhouses, recently released gaming revenue reports revealing notable trends in the industry. Nevada reported record numbers for both December 2023 and the entire fiscal year, while Macau experienced a significant surge in January.

From a landmark Supreme Court decision legalizing online casinos to the popularity of real money slots, Nevada has emerged as a powerhouse in online casinos, including both traditional and cryptocurrency casinos.

Nevada’s Record Gaming Revenue

In December 2023, Nevada achieved a historic milestone with record revenue of $1.43 billion, a 9.04% increase over the previous year.

The state’s gaming industry continued its upward trajectory throughout fiscal 2023, setting a new record of $15.5 billion in statewide revenue. Slot machines remain a major revenue driver, accounting for $10.3 billion in gaming revenue. However, table, counter, and card games showed notable growth of 8.35%, outpacing slot machine sales growth.

On a regional basis, Clark County saw a 9.75% increase in gaming revenue, reaching $1.27 billion, while Washoe County saw a slight decrease of 2.87%, reaching $80.4 million. Elko County, in particular, achieved $36.4 million in gaming revenue in 2023, an impressive 14.96% increase.

These regional changes reflect the different dynamics of Nevada’s gaming landscape as the gaming industry continues to thrive in the ‘Silver State’, setting new benchmarks and attracting visitors from around the world.

Macau’s remarkable growth

Outside of Nevada and the United States, Macau, a popular gaming destination in Asia and often referred to as the “Las Vegas of the East,” reported a whopping 67% increase in gaming revenue in January 2024 compared to the previous year.

This surge highlights the resilience and recovery of Macau’s gaming sector following the challenges posed by the pandemic. The positive momentum of Macau’s gaming industry bodes well for its future prospects and contributes to the vitality of the global gaming market.
