Labs, the core developer of Optimism, soon released a flaw proof on the OP Sepolia testnet. ON mainnet.

“Open source, full-featured fault proofs are available in real-time for OP Sepolia. Permissionless verification allows anyone to participate in the system without a whitelist,” the company said.

Proof of Fault serves as a security mechanism in the Ethereum Layer 2 network, allowing users to contest transactions that may be fraudulent or inaccurate. This is important to ensure that off-chain transaction processing is not tampered with.

The OP mainnet currently lacks fault proofing, which is a cause for concern about network security and decentralization. This means that users on the network must trust that block producers submit the correct layer 1 state root. Moreover, the network relies on a security council of its members for backup, which can make it a central point of failure.

Now the project is moving towards implementation after already using it on the Sepolia testnet.

OP Mainnet uses a scaling solution called Optimistic Rollup for its operations. This technology aggregates Ethereum transactions on a secondary off-chain layer and allows for cheaper transaction processing to solve Ethereum’s scalability issues.

OP Labs, the developer of the OP mainnet, also operates a development software stack called OP Stack that allows developers to launch their own layer 2 blockchain. Coinbase, a giant cryptocurrency exchange, developed a blockchain called Base using the OP stack.

Most optimistic rollup blockchains have not yet decentralized their networks by incorporating fault proofs and maintaining decentralized contract upgrades. That said, Arbitrum, the closest competitor to the OP mainnet, already provides fault proofing.
