Unlike its competitors, Mistral AI has decided to offer its models as free downloads rather than providing access through an API. This approach allows developers to run models on their own devices and servers.
French artificial intelligence (AI) startup Mistral AI is valued at $2 billion after a successful funding round that raised 385 million euros ($415 million) to further develop its innovative technology and open source software. Achieved.
Significance of Mistral AI’s new funding round
The funding round, led by Andreessen Horowitz (a16z) and supported by early backer Lightspeed Ventures, closed on December 11, following a successful initial funding round in June that generated $113 million. Additional investors include Salesforce, Bpifrance, and Eric Schmidt.
Arthur Mensch, CEO of Mistral AI, outlined his vision for the company: “Since the creation of Mistral AI in May, we have pursued a clear trajectory. We pursue an open, accountable and decentralized approach to technology.”
Founded in March by former leaders of Google DeepMind and Meta Platforms Inc (NASDAQ: META), Mistral AI is gaining an edge in the highly competitive AI ecosystem. The startup has carved out a niche by focusing on generative AI tools, chatbot development, and open source technologies for custom functionality.
Notably, the company plans to launch its products to the general public in early 2024, anticipating widespread adoption of its innovative AI solutions. The company’s flagship model, Mistral 7B, launched in September, differentiates itself from industry options like GPT-4 in that it is trained on “small” datasets of about 7 billion parameters.
Unlike its competitors, Mistral AI has decided to offer its models as free downloads rather than providing access through an API. This approach allows developers to run models on their own devices and servers.
In particular, Mistral 7B was released under the Apache 2.0 license, highlighting the company’s commitment to an open, responsible and decentralized approach to technology. However, it is worth noting that this model was developed using a proprietary dataset and unpublished weights, adding a touch of exclusivity to its creation.
Mistral’s impact on EU AI law
Mistral AI has not only focused on technological advancements, but has also played a significant role in shaping the debate on AI law in the European Union. The company has been actively lobbying for a full exemption for its base model, arguing that regulations should specifically target companies and use cases that produce products that directly impact end users.
In light of these developments, negotiators from the European Parliament and the Council on Friday signed a provisional agreement on rules governing the use of AI. With its latest round of funding, the company has released its developer platform into beta, allowing other companies to pay for use of Mistral AI models via an API.
Along with the Mistral 7B, the developer platform introduces a new model, the Mixtral 8x7B. Mixtral 8x7B utilizes a network of routers to efficiently process input tokens. This technique allows increasing the number of parameters while maintaining cost and latency control. Like the Mistral 7B, the Mixtral 8x7B model is released under the Apache 2.0 license and is free to download.
