Layer 2 network Optimism has unveiled its fourth airdrop, generously distributing over 10 million OP tokens worth approximately $40.8 million to web3 artists.
This initiative aims to honor artists who bring creativity to blockchain and recognize the critical role their contributions play in Optimism Collective’s ecosystem. According to the official statement, 22,998 recipients will be able to claim their tokens by February 13, 2025.
“A great society needs artists,” Optimism states on its claims page. “This airdrop is a token of our appreciation for artists and their ability to bring creativity to blockchain. “Your efforts are critical to the success of Optimism Collective.”
Airdrop eligibility criteria were based on NFT art creation on the Ethereum (ETH) mainnet or Optimism Superchain from January 10, 2023 to January 10 of this year.
Rewards are calculated based on the popularity of the artist’s NFT and are determined by gas fees incurred during minting or trading activities. For example, generating 1 ETH worth of gas on a superchain will earn the creator 5,000 OP, with a limit of 6,000 OP per address.
Additionally, for creators who meet certain bonus criteria, such as initial contract creation or significant post-launch activity, their token allocation may be increased by 50% or 1.5x.
The latest airdrop follows the previous three distribution methods, with the most recent previous event in September 2023 distributing 19.4 million OP tokens.
Optimism has announced plans for future airdrops, with approximately 560 million OP tokens still allocated for these events. Our current strategy is as follows: shared Social media platform X aims to improve reward mechanisms and encourage positive contributions within the Optimism network.
As of February 20th, OP tokens are trading at $4.08, up slightly over the past 24 hours. The token’s circulating supply is 957.4 million out of a total supply of 4.3 billion, demonstrating its growing role in the Optimism ecosystem and the wider web3 community.
