Payment processing company Stripe plans to launch global USDC payments this summer, more than six years after the company ended support for Bitcoin (BTC).
John Collison, President and Co-Founder of Stripe presentation Payment feature scheduled for Thursday.
In his presentation, Collison demonstrated how customers can connect their cryptocurrency wallets to Stripe and make instant payments using USDC on Solana (SOL) and Ethereum (ETH). Businesses that use payment companies can also add stablecoin options for payments to their customers.
The company previously supported Bitcoin payment options, but discontinued the feature in April 2018, citing a lack of payment usability for the leading cryptocurrency asset.
In 2022, Stripe launched an extensive suite of tools and services for cryptocurrency-focused businesses.
Collison explained at the time:
“Stripe now supports cryptocurrency businesses including exchanges, on-ramps, wallets, and non-fungible token (NFT) marketplaces.
“It offers a variety of features, including payouts, KYC (know your customer), identity verification, fraud prevention, and more.”
Later that year, Stripe launched a built-in fiat-to-crypto onramp for Web3 developers, and in early 2023 the payments giant began offering a hosted onramp available at crypto.link.com.
USDC aims to maintain a 1:1 peg with the US dollar and is the second largest stablecoin by market capitalization after USDT.
