Pioneering digital artist Andries Odendaal unveils his first generative art collection, FABRIK. Commissioned by NFTfi co-founder Stephen Young, this free mint represents nearly three years of artistic and technical advancement. With a limited edition of 1024 NFTs, FABRIK is designed as a token of gratitude. NFTfi Community We aim to redefine the boundaries of generative art.
What is FABRIC?
FABRIK is the culmination of almost three years of artistic and technical development. At the core of FABRIK are advanced algorithms that can create a variety of complex artistic outcomes using simple geometric building blocks. Each work within the series is composed of repetitive, interlocking parallelogram motifs that are algorithmically woven into a complex geometric tapestry. On a larger scale, the strict interlocking angles of simple geometric shapes create a patterned sense of stability that is initially reminiscent of three-dimensional architectural structures or scaffolding. At very small scales, these shapes come together to form intricate details reminiscent of the layered strata found in geological structures or inorganic corrosion growths.
Custom code and instructions stored on-chain
Andries built FABRIK using custom code without relying on external libraries. The metadata structure and all instructions are stored on-chain, ensuring the integrity and longevity of the artwork. Contrasts of scale and texture are used to evoke tensions between stability, structure, order, the power of change and impermanence. In this work, the same recursive algorithm that creates strict structural integrity also leads to the illusion of collapse and collapse.
“I called this project FABRIK. Because I like the phonetic meaning of the word in the sense of a fundamental basic structure, like ‘the structure of society’ or ‘the structure of the universe’. Production also has meaning. In Afrikaans, ‘fabriek’ means factory.” — Andries explains the inspiration behind the name of his collection.
“One of Andries’ strengths is that he is not only very sophisticated visually and artistically, but also very capable from a programming perspective. He thinks being such a good programmer and having an artistic background to be able to put those things together is a pretty rare combination. He can read his PhD mathematics thesis and turn it into something that looks beautiful and has real artistic merit and thinking behind it. I think it’s very unique.” — Why Stephen turned to Andries
Casting Details
FABRIK is launched as a free mint on the Ethereum mainnet utilizing the ERC-721 standard. The collection consists of 1,024 uniquely created NFTs. Edition size cannot be changed. Of these, 1,000 NFTs will only be allocated to whitelisted NFTfi users, while the remaining 24 will be allocated to artists, project teams, and commissioners.
The collection is managed by the smart contract address 0xB40D211C9E7974eDC1DFa25a1c57291c0231a135.
“A lot of the NFTfi community are collectors of generative art and we wanted to give something back to them. I got into the NFT space because I love art. I love art and technology, so I wanted to create something for that. If this work of art falls into the hands of a collector who appreciates the work that went into it and Andries’ care, that would be a great outcome for me.” – Stephen explains why he is gifting Fabrik to the NFTfi community.
