  • Marc Boiron, CEO of Polygon Labs, claimed that the OP Stack chain will be connected to AggLayer.
  • This statement comes in response to the debate surrounding the fragmentation of Layer 2 interoperability solutions.
  • Boiron didn’t specify which OP Stack chains would be connected to AggLayer, but he hinted that at least one is considering doing so.

With more Layer 2 chains being created every day, interoperability has become a critical user experience and innovation hurdle, which has forced Ethereum scaling solution providers to release their interoperability roadmaps in recent months. While the interoperability solutions proposed by these solution providers typically only support projects built on their own technology stack, Polygon Labs, the developer of the eponymous Ethereum scaling network, has taken a different approach.

Polygon aims to enable all chains, regardless of technology stack, consensus mechanism, or virtual machine, to connect to AggLayer, the interoperability solution at the core of the aggregation chain architecture. Polygon Labs CEO Marc Boiron recently reiterated this focus.

Polygon’s Boiron Advises OP Stack Chains to Join AggLayer

Polygon Labs CEO Marc Boiron has claimed that chains built with OP Stack, a competing Ethereum Layer 2 solution provider Optimism Labs, will plug into AggLayer. The Polygon Labs representative expressed this view on Monday, August 19, in response to the debate over the fragmentation of Layer 2 interoperability by technology stacks.

Boiron emphasized that AggLayer is not just for the Polygon chain. “It’s for the whole ecosystem,” he argued, citing Movement Labs’ recent decision to connect the MoveVM Layer 2 chain to AggLayer. When asked which of the OP Layer 2 chains would join AggLayer, he responded:

"OP Stack Chains Will Be Connecting to the Agglayer, which will show that Superchain chains can connect as well," adding, "The only reason any Superchain chains would not connect to the AggLayer is for competitive reasons, not technical ones. But there is no good competitive reason because the AggLayer is built in a way that is compatible with the vision of the Superchain."

Boiron didn’t go into specifics about Optimistic rollups being included in AggLayer, but at least one person hinted that they’re considering doing so in the future.

Will Celo Join AggLayer?

After months of consideration, in April 2024, Celo, a mobile-first Layer 1 blockchain, announced that it had chosen Optimism’s OP Stack for its Layer 2 transition over Polygon’s CDK and Matter Labs’ ZK Stack. Nevertheless, Celo emphasized that it wants interoperability with other technology stacks, which it can do by integrating Polygon’s Type 1 Prover, which any chain can leverage by plugging into AggLayer with minimal code modifications.

Currently, projects plugged into AggLayer include Polygon zkEVM, OKX’s X Layer, and Astar zkEVM.

On the other side

  • It is still unclear if and when Optimistic rollups will join AggLayer.
  • The developers are still working on several aspects of AggLayer.

Why this matters

Greater interoperability between Ethereum Layer 2 chains is expected to provide a more seamless user experience, allowing users to execute transactions across applications without worrying about which chain they are on. AggLayer is positioned to play a key role in this future, which could be a huge help to Polygon.
