Private Key – Why does WIF checksum the private key?

The purpose of the checksum is to ensure data integrity during transmission. Given that WIF stands for Wallet Import Format, we assume that private keys in this format are being transferred from one place to another and that people typically want to verify that the transfer was successful. If your format has a built-in checksum, you can quickly perform an integrity check upon import and notify the user of any obvious errors.
