The creator economy, valued at $156.37 billion by 2024, is quickly becoming one of the world’s largest industries. Independent creators are increasingly using big tech platforms to make a living. But they’re soon facing challenges, including unfair revenue distribution.
This is what the Solana-based DRiP project aims to solve. DRiP recently secured $8 million in seed funding to enable creators to engage directly with their fans.
DRiP Secures $8M Seed to Revolutionize Creator Economy
Online creators are a growing industry, but they still rely on big tech platforms to connect with their fans. But that could soon change. On Monday, September 9, DRiP, a decentralized creator platform built on the Solana blockchain, announced that it had raised $8 million in seed funding to empower creators.
DRiP’s platform allows creators to broadcast digital content such as images, music, and videos directly to their subscribers on a weekly basis. In return, fans can show their appreciation through micropayments as low as a tenth of a cent. Solana’s low transaction fees make this possible. Fans can also bid on flash auctions for more exclusive or rare content.
Co-founder Vibhu Norby emphasized DRiP’s goal of making the creator economy fairer, with creators “keeping the majority of what they earn,” while users get “premium content for their fans that can never be censored or taken away.”
The round was led by NFX and Progression, founded by former TikTok executives. Additional funding was provided by Coinbase Ventures and several angel investors.
Creator Economy Grows, But Faces Problems
The creator economy is growing rapidly. According to a report by Coherent Market Insights, the industry is currently worth $156.37 billion. Current projections predict that by 2030, that figure will reach $525 billion.
Despite the significant growth potential, the industry has its challenges. In the current model, creators rely on large technology platforms to reach their audiences. These platforms charge high commissions, as high as 50%, as in the case of Twitch.
Blockchain-based companies like DRiP are trying to solve this by creating a decentralized platform that allows creators to interact with their audience without intermediaries.
On the other side
- Several crypto projects, including: Justin Sun’s TRON and sandbox.
- Despite these potential benefits, Web3 companies have so far struggled to gain traction among users.
Why this matters
Decentralized platforms could create a fairer digital space that benefits users and creators rather than big tech companies, a development that has raised concerns about the rapidly expanding creator economy.
