Art auction house Sotheby’s has opened bidding on a select Bitcoin ordinal collection.
The auction, called “Natively Digital: An Ordinals Curated Sale,” features 19 works, including rare Satoshis, works by pioneering Bitcoin Ordinals artist Shroomtoshi, generative art, and items connected to Bitcoin Ordinals brand Taproot Wizards. Auction ends January 22nd at 2pm.
“Just as Ordinals has seen explosive growth over the past year, this sale shines a spotlight on the incredible range of creative diversity found within the Bitcoin ecosystem,” Sotheby’s said in a press release.
Sotheby’s First Bitcoin Ordinals Sale
The Block previously reported that Sotheby’s concluded its first Bitcoin Ordinals auction on December 13. The auction included three pieces from the BitcoinShrooms collection, considered one of the first Bitcoin Ordinals projects created by Shroomtoshi. The sale reached $450,850 at closing, five times more than the combined estimate for the three works, Sotheby’s said in a statement.
“The sale of three BitcoinShrooms last month was a test case for introducing Ordinals to the auction market,” said Michael Bouhanna, Sotheby’s head of digital art. “The tremendous success of that sale was evidence of the explosive growth of Ordinals as a new arena for artists and creators to expand the scope of digital art and collectibles and create a lasting imprint on the Bitcoin blockchain. Ordinals continues to attract collectors “This new avenue will not only push the boundaries of how we conceptualize digital collectibles, but will also shine a spotlight on the unique fusion of digital art and cryptocurrency culture.”
