Streamr originally announced the launch of the Streamr Network 1.0 mainnet in 2017, a milestone marking the completion of its roadmap. 1.0 introduces full deployment of the $DATA token incentive layer, transforming the network into a fully decentralized protocol with the ability for users to run and operate it.
The culmination of over six years of research and development, three incentivized testnets, and overcoming technical hurdles that resulted in a last-minute launch interruption, Streamr 1.0 marks the arrival of decentralized data broadcasting.
Key features of Streamr 1.0:
- Fully deployed token economics: Activation of the $DATA token incentive layer means that the Streamr network is a neutral and fully decentralized messaging protocol that can operate autonomously across teams.
- Introducing new network roles: Peer-to-peer market forces between backers, operators, and delegators are unlocked.
- Stream Sponsorship: Backers create and fund sponsored streams, and staked operators earn money from them. These smart contracts manage the distribution of rewards between operators who run the nodes and help pass data inside the nodes.
- Tracker-free network architecture: Move to a traceless architecture leveraging globally distributed hash tables (DHTs) for improved efficiency and scalability.
- New benefits for node operators: With 1.0, you can now accept delegations and take a cut of income, allowing node operators to earn more. 1.0 also brings other improvements for node operators, including removing per-IP node limits, claiming instant rewards from active sponsorships, and other quality of life improvements.
Unlock new use cases:
1.0 sets the stage for exploring new use cases in areas such as Decentralized Physical Infrastructure Network (DePIN), decentralized AI, and decentralized video streaming.
Distributed video streaming: Streamr is exploring decentralized live video streaming, testing its ability to deliver scalable and reliable video feeds to large audiences. By leveraging the network’s peer-to-peer protocol, Streamr can optimize efficiency and scalability by eliminating reliance on centralized distribution points, allowing viewers to contribute directly to the broadcast network as they consume content.
Defin: Streamr 1.0 enhances DePIN’s ability to move from a centralized data pipeline to a fully decentralized array of contributors. The network’s serverless, secure, and scalable framework is ideal for broadcasting data between connected devices and moves DePIN toward a truly decentralized architecture.
Decentralized AI: The 1.0 milestone has the potential to transform artificial intelligence by positioning Streamr as a neutral data layer and providing secure data streams for AI development, trust, and transparency. Streamr allows AI models to interconnect, share insights, connect to real-time tuning data, distribute live content, and overall increase intelligence. Integrating with decentralized frameworks can provide a step toward ensuring that AI operations remain more open, verifiable, and up-to-date.
These changes, along with the exploration of new use cases, highlight Streamr’s commitment to pushing the boundaries of what is possible in the realm of distributed technology.
Streamer Introduction
Streamr is building a real-time data protocol for the decentralized web. It includes a scalable, low-latency, secure peer-to-peer network for data broadcasting, delivery, and exchange. As part of its vision, Streamr has built The Hub, a dApp that champions open data to enable DePin, AI, and Web3 builders to decentralize their technology stack with real-time data flows. The Streamr project was started by real-time data veterans with a background in algorithmic trading and financial markets.
