Consider the revival of ‘triage’, an ancient lottery governance practice that is currently gaining traction among technology and AI companies such as Meta, OpenAI, and Anthropic.

‘Selection’, the ancient practice of electing public officials or making decisions through lotteries, is experiencing a modern revival among leading technology and artificial intelligence companies. According to a16z crypto, companies like Meta, OpenAI, and Anthropic are exploring these new approaches to decision-making.

concept of alignment

Sorting is a method of governance that dates back to ancient Athens, where citizens were randomly selected to fill government positions. This method is believed to promote fairness and equality and minimize bias that can occur in traditional election processes. In recent years, this concept has gained attention as a potential solution to some of the challenges facing modern governance systems.

Technology industry interest

Technology companies’ interest in classification stems from its potential to democratize decision-making processes and improve transparency. As issues such as data privacy, ethical AI, and corporate responsibility rise, these companies are seeking innovative ways to include diverse perspectives in their governance structures.

Application of modern technology

Companies like Meta and OpenAI are investigating how alignment can be applied to internal governance. In doing so, they aim to integrate a wider range of voices into important decisions, potentially leading to more balanced and equitable outcomes. This approach could also help address criticisms related to the technology industry’s lack of centralized decision-making and accountability.

Challenges and Considerations

Despite the potential benefits, implementing classification in modern organizations is not without its challenges. A random selection process may not always produce individuals with the required expertise for a particular role. There is also a need to balance randomness and competence to ensure effective governance.

A survey of these tech giants highlights significant changes in the way large organizations consider governance. Integrating ancient practices like classification as we navigate the complexities of today’s digital environment can provide new pathways to creating more inclusive and democratic systems.
