Web3 games witnessed nearly $1 billion in investments in April 2024 alone. The industry is growing at a record pace, with countless games being released every quarter. Much of the credit for this success goes to L2 rollup. So what role does rollup play in Web3 gaming infrastructure? Let’s explore.

Rollup and Web3 Games

1. Expand your game to fit your budget

Web3 games require high transaction throughput to handle in-game transactions. But transactions must also be processed cheaply. You can’t expect to pay hundreds of dollars for a game to complete basic tasks, especially while the main network is congested. Blockchain Rollup Provides an easy alternative to the major networks. They process a much larger number of transactions than the main network at a much lower cost. In other words, you kill two birds with one stone.

The game requires a large number of transactions with minimal or no fees, but the security requirements are not as high as you would expect from Ethereum. Rollups give you the option to exponentially increase scalability by moving to Layer 3, Layer 4, and more.

2. Improved user experience

Scaling has additional benefits. Near-instantaneous transaction processing through rollups eliminates the seams, making room for better systems and better utilization of the extra time provided. And because the network can support more transactions, games are free to get more players on board, helping creators and benefiting existing players through wider adoption.

3. Interoperability

Cross-game item trading, shared in-game economies, and integrated player entities across different games built on the same layer 2 rollup are some of the best features of Web3 games. Layer 2 rollup uses standardized protocols to facilitate this across different games and platforms.

This means that game assets and data can be easily moved from one game to another. Assets purchased in one game can be used in other games as well. It offers gamers an attractive opportunity to trade assets. Transactions are incentivized because it is based on blockchain technology, records of ownership, proof of uniqueness of assets, and compatibility with other games.

4. Account abstraction

Rollups also improve user experience by facilitating account abstraction by abstracting the tedious task of managing security keys or seed phrases behind a friendly user interface. All of these transactions still occur. You don’t have to think about them. Vitalik Buterin, the creator of Ethereum, believes that account abstraction will increase mass adoption of the network. This makes the player onboarding process more seamless.

5. Better gaming and adoption

Reduced costs and increased speed allow developers to build more complex mechanisms and experiment with more features more often without having to worry about the financial aspects.

Otherwise, this would have seriously hindered game development as developers would have to think about the cost of new features, the cost of failure, etc. By addressing these issues through rollups, developers are more likely to experiment without worrying about these issues. The result is more, different, and better games for players.

TL;DR

Overall, it improves layer 2 rollup by solving scalability issues on major networks like Ethereum. web3 games Development and adoption are happening on all fronts, and it’s now difficult to imagine the Web3 gaming space without it. Rollup plays a big role in this and will continue to do so through technological advancements and a variety of interesting solutions. If you’re curious about rollups, here’s a great article.
