As described in the Bitfinex’s chart decoder series, explore the role of MACD indicators to identify momentum changes in the market. Learn how to interpret MACD components for a better deal.

According to the Bitfinex chart decoder series, MACD (Moving Average Convergence Divergence) indicators are a central tool for traders aimed at deciphering momentum in the market. This series provides insights on how to explore technical indicators and effectively use it for success.

Understanding MACD

MACD is a momentum indicator that helps traders determine the strength of market movement. Unlike the simple moving average that indicates the direction of the trend, the MACD provides insight into how powerful the trend is. Early detection of momentum shift can be important for traders who want to use the market movement before the price behavior becomes clear.

MACD component

MACD consists of three main elements.

  • MACD line (blue): This line acts as a momentum tracker and shows whether the market is getting energy or losing in response to the change in the price direction.
  • Signal Line (Orange): It helps to identify purchases or sales signals closely along the MACD line. The crossover on the signal line suggests optimistic movements, and the crossover below represents a weak movement.
  • Histogram Bar: The bar shows the distance between the MACD and the signal line, and the momentum enhancement and contraction rods are slow.

Why traders use MACD

MACD prefers the ability to accurately find potential input and outlet points. The trader provides more clearly when the trend is inverted, or when the trend is reversed or to prevent the transaction. This is a valuable tool for both beginners and skilled merchants.

Practical application

Traders can apply MACD with other indicators such as the exponential movement average (EMA) or Simple Moving Average (SMA) to make more powerful confirmation of the trend. In addition, using MACD crossovers near a significant support or resistance level can improve the accuracy of transaction decisions. However, it should be noted that relying on MACD only to the side may cause a wrong signal.

Comparative Analysis: MACD vs. SMA/EMA

MACD focuses on momentum, but SMA and EMA relate to the direction and duration of the trend. The installment of the upcoming chart decoder series will explore the relative robbery index (RSI), another essential tool for evaluating the market situation.
