We explore the role of Guardians in Wormhole’s cross-chain interoperability and ensure safe and reliable blockchain transactions.

Wormhole, the leading interoperability platform, facilitates seamless communication and data or value exchange between different blockchain networks. At the heart of the platform’s security and functionality are Guardians. These entities play a critical role in ensuring the trustworthiness and integrity of cross-chain interactions processed by the Wormhole infrastructure.

Why are guardians important?

Guardians are essential for validating messages across multiple blockchains. When an event occurs on one blockchain, other blockchains must be aware of the event in order to process the cross-chain action or transaction. Guardians observe events on the source chain, sign the payload, and combine the signatures to create a verified action authorization (VAA). This VAA serves as proof that the event was observed and agreed upon by the majority of the Wormhole network, ensuring the authenticity of the event across the chain.

Think of VAA as a group of trusted experts who can independently verify events and deliver proven statements. If a majority agrees, their collective approval guarantees the authenticity of the event, underpinning the multichain interoperability that Wormhole’s product provides.

Who are the Guardians?

Guardians are reputable entities within the blockchain space, including leading validation companies. They monitor blockchain health and ensure the integrity of cross-chain transactions. The current set of Guardians can be viewed on the Wormhole Dashboard and includes some of the most trusted names in the industry.

Each Guardian operates independently, observing and signing messages before combining their signatures with those of other Guardians. This decentralized approach ensures that there is no single point of failure, improving the overall security and robustness of the Wormhole network.

Guardian Network

The Guardian Network is a collection of Guardians that serve as the oracle component of Wormhole and form the backbone of the entire ecosystem. It operates under five core design principles:

  • Dispersion: Control is distributed across multiple parties, preventing a single point of failure.
  • Modularity: Various components, such as the Oracle Network (Guardian), Relay, and Application, are decoupled and can be independently upgraded and modified.
  • Chain Agnosticism: It supports various ecosystems such as EVM, Solana, Algorand, etc., and can support all chains regardless of consensus mechanism or programming language.
  • Scalability: Handle large transaction volumes and capture significant value without throughput bottlenecks.
  • Upgradeability: Built to adapt to the rapidly changing Web3 environment, it can be updated without disrupting existing integrations.

Guardian Network supports cross-chain message validation, cross-chain query validation, and asset bridging across the Wormhole family of products, including Wormhole Messaging, Queries, and Connect. Guardian also acts as a validator for Wormhole Gateway, a Cosmos SDK-based blockchain that connects the Wormhole ecosystem to the IBC universe.
