Web3 domain name provider Unstoppable Domains and global crypto company Blockchain.com are collaborating to create one of the first web browser and email compatible Web3 domains through an application with the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN).

The strategic move announced today aims to create a “.blockchain” Web3 domain, Blockchain.com said in a statement shared with The Block, submitting an application to ICANN in time for a new round of generic top-level domain (gTLD) registrations. . The application process will begin next year with the release of the Applicant Guidebook. However, the application window will not open until April 2026.

If your application is successful, your .blockchain domain will join ICANN-registered gTLDs such as .com, .net, and .org, leveraging Blockchain.com’s 40 million verified users. Blockchain.com claims to have facilitated the creation of over 90 million cryptocurrency wallets and over $1.2 trillion worth of cryptocurrency transactions.

“We are very excited to partner with Blockchain.com on this ambitious venture,” said Sandy Carter, COO of Unstoppable Domains. “Our alliance is ready to launch with Web3 domains to test and deliver low-cost solutions. “This is a step to ensure we can plan and strategize for upcoming ICANN operations.”

Bridging the gap between Web2 and Web3

Unstoppable Domains’ collaboration with Blockchain.com follows a similar initiative by the Ethereum Name Service, which integrated browser-compatible “.box” web domains last April.

The .box domain has already been recognized as an ICANN-approved top-level domain and, along with .eth, is the first on-chain gTLD included in the ENS Manager app.

Domains hosted in .box are searchable and indexable by major browsers such as Google Chrome and Safari, making them compatible with popular email services.

Web3 domain names provide an alternative to the Domain Name System (DNS), enabling more user-friendly transactions by mapping human-readable names such as “alice.eth” to more complex cryptographic addresses.

Over time, more Web3 TLDs could potentially receive their own Web2 “twins,” allowing organizations to bridge the gap between Web3 domains and traditional Internet spaces, the company said.
