Ethereum’s network has taken a huge leap forward in scalability by completing the “Extend Base Rollup” milestone, paving the way for buckle trees and record expiration.

According to a post on Warpcast by Vitalik Buterin, the Ethereum network has reached an important milestone in its scalability roadmap by successfully implementing “native rollup scaling.” These developments are a key component of Ethereum’s transition to a more scalable and efficient blockchain, which is essential to its long-term success and adoption.

What’s next?

Following this milestone, the Ethereum development community is targeting the integration of buckle trees and historical expiration. Verkle trees are an evolution of Merkle trees that allow for more efficient and compact proofs, reducing the amount of data a verifier must store. History expiration is a concept that removes old transaction data, reducing “state bloat” and making it easier for users to run full nodes.

Introducing the “Basic Rollup Extension”

Rollup is a solution to execute transactions outside of the main Ethereum chain (layer 1) and post transaction data back. This “base rollup extension” is the foundation for increasing the throughput of the network while maintaining security by leveraging the main chain for data availability and consensus.

Buckle Tree’s Promise

Going forward, the Ethereum development team is focusing on Buckle Tree integration. The Verkle tree is a proposed upgrade to the existing Merkle tree, a data structure that can safely and efficiently verify the content of a blockchain. Verkle trees optimize storage and computation efficiency, significantly reducing proof size and making running Ethereum nodes easier.

Understanding History Expiration

Another upcoming feature is record expiration, a mechanism that will allow the Ethereum network to prevent excessive growth of blockchain data size by deleting old historical data. This alleviates the burden on nodes, ensuring that storage space requirements are not a barrier to validators and full node operators, ultimately contributing to the decentralization and robustness of the network.

Community reaction and expectations

The announcement received a positive response from the Ethereum community, with many expressing their excitement and support for the progress. Vitalik’s update to Warpcast garnered 1728 reactions and a variety of comments from key players in the Ethereum ecosystem. Brian from @br1an.eth extended an invitation to discuss updates to the @unlonely platform, indicating strong interest in the implications of this development.

The future of layer 2 scaling solutions

Questions about the timeline for Layer 2 solutions adopting new features such as blobs, a form of data storage that can further reduce costs, were raised by community members such as Hugo Montenegro (@hmheck). Expectations for more reasonable transaction costs have become clear, with users like Pacheco (@pachec0) raising concerns about the current fee structure.

conclusion

The Ethereum network’s recent performance of achieving the “Scaling Base Rollup” milestone has generated enthusiasm among stakeholders and users alike. The path toward a more scalable and user-friendly Ethereum continues to unfold as the community looks forward to Buckle Tree implementation and record expiration.
