Ethereum co-founder Vitalik Buterin, along with co-authors Sam Wilson, Ansgar Dietrichs, and Matt Garnett, proposed Ethereum Improvement Proposal (EIP) 7702 as an alternative to EIP-3074, with the goal of improving account abstraction on the Ethereum network.
EIP-7702 proposes a new transaction type that allows an Externally Owned Account (EOA), which is a regular Ethereum account address, to temporarily function as a smart contract wallet during a transaction, with its original state later restored.
EIP-7702 serves as a new alternative to EIP-3074 (which was previously considered for inclusion in a future Pectra upgrade). But now Uniswap founder Hayden Adams has added quantum resistance and better compatibility with 4337. famous.
EIP-7702 aims to achieve compatibility with ERC-4337, another broad standard for smart contract wallets, which is considered an “end-game account abstraction”.
“This EIP is designed to be highly compatible with the end-game account abstraction without excessively including the granular details of ERC-4337,” the proposal states.
Account abstraction allows the wallet to act as a smart contract and operate a variety of sophisticated features such as multi-factor authentication, wallet social recovery, and the flexibility for users to transact with any token.
As the Ethereum community evaluates the proposal, EIP-7702 could redefine how account abstraction is implemented in future network upgrades.
The new transaction types proposed in EIP-7702 include contract code and signature fields, providing the same functionality as those proposed in EIP-3074, such as batch and sponsored transactions.
By allowing EOAs to be temporarily converted to contracts, they can be included in the ERC-4337 bundle in a way that is compatible with the existing EntryPoint.
