Ethereum founder Vitalik Buterin shared the cryptocurrency project’s roadmap for 2024. In a series of posts to A few changes.
Ethereum Roadmap 2024
According to information disclosed by Buterin, Ethereum’s main focus in 2024 will be centered on six main goals: Merge, Surge, Scourge, the Verge, Purge, and Splurge.
Ethereum Merge aims to create an ideal, simple, powerful and decentralized Proof of Stake (PoS) network.
The merge occurred in September 2022 with the integration of the Ethereum mainnet and the beacon chain, ending the proof-of-work consensus algorithm. Speaking about the improvements following the 2024 merge, Buterin argued that the Single Slot Finality (SSF) mechanism presents the easiest way to remove the limitations of the current Ethereum PoS design.

Regarding Surge, Buterin said there will be notable advancements in rollup extensions through EIP 4844 and significant advancements within the various rollups. We will also focus on long-term improvements in cross-rollup standards and interoperability, leading Ethereum to achieve its goal of processing more than 100,000 transactions per second.
The Ethereum co-founder also emphasized that Scourge goals are redirected toward addressing economic centralization in two key areas: MEV and liquid staking/pooling. Additionally, Buterin stated that significant progress will be made in achieving Verge with the introduction of verkle trees, which will contribute to easily verifying blocks on the Ethereum network.
Buterin faces allegations from former Ethereum Foundation advisor
In other news, Buterin was accused of “defrauding the world” by former Ethereum Foundation advisor Steven Nerayoff. The statement came in response to Buterin’s concerns about Web 3’s original vision being distorted.
In a blog post on December 28, the Ethereum founder shared that the blockchain project was initially designed to function as a decentralized shared hard drive. However, users have since pivoted from that vision, focusing more on Ethereum’s financial applications.
Nerayoff countered Buterin’s claims, saying the Ethereum co-founder and “his cabal” were responsible for the distortion of the “Web 3 vision” they used to “fool the world.” To date, there has been no response to these accusations.
