Ethereum co-founder expresses concerns about unchecked AI developments
Ethereum co-founder Vitalik Buterin highlights the potential of ultra-advanced artificial intelligence (AI) to surpass humans as the next “peak species” on Earth. In his blog post, Buterin highlighted the inherent risks posed by AI development, suggesting that AI could pose a threat to human survival if left unchecked.
AI threatens humanity’s existence, warns Buterin
Buterin raises concerns about the possibility that AI will view humanity as a threat to its survival, leading to extreme consequences, including human extinction. He cited a survey of machine learning researchers that estimated the probability of AI harming humanity at 5 to 10 percent. Buterin emphasizes the need for proactive measures to ensure human control over powerful AI and suggests brain-computer interfaces (BCIs) as a potential safeguard.
Protecting humanity through brain-computer interfaces
Buterin proposes the integration of brain-computer interfaces as a means to give humans more control over AI-based computation and cognition. BCI reduces communication loop time by creating a direct communication path between the brain and external devices. According to Buterin, this could strengthen human agency and reduce the risk that AI will make decisions that are inconsistent with human values.
