Evgeny Gaevoy, CEO of Wintermute, said that if Ethereum fails in the future, it will not be due to technical shortcomings compared to competitors such as Solana. Instead, the core problem is the contradictions in Ethereum’s leadership.
In a recent post on
His comments came in response to the controversy that arose following Vitalik Buterin’s criticism of celebrity memecoins. According to Buterin, projects should aim to deliver social value and leave participants with content, rather than focusing on enriching celebrities and early investors.
Buterin’s stance drew a sharp rebuke from hip-hop artist Iggy Azalea, who recently launched her own meme coin, MOTHER. She posted a meme showing her holding a baby boy who looks just like Buterin.
Azalea’s photo prompted Uniswap Labs co-founder Hayden Adams to defend Buterin’s role.
He criticized Azalea for downplaying Buterin’s contributions to the cryptocurrency community, and expressed disappointment that instead of reacting positively and using the proceeds to support social causes, the singer decided to mock Buterin.
There is no problem with Meme Coin or Celeb Coin. I think there’s value in memetic interest and it’s cool to create a market for it.

Gaevoy’s comments sparked controversy among cryptocurrency members. Many people disagreed with his views, saying that opposing celebrity memecoins is not the same as building a socialist system.
I’m not sure if Hayden and Vitalik saying they don’t like certain trends means they’re against capitalism (or no longer participating in building the capitalist system).
They both have a specific vision for cryptocurrency in terms of the types of things people will build and what people will build.

Regarding this discrepancy, Gaevoy said it all comes down to basic principles.
According to him, if capitalism is the foundation, it is beneficial to integrate functions to mitigate negative impacts. However, if the primary goal is ‘social justice’ or creating ‘only good things’, capitalism should not be left behind.
To me it’s about basic guiding principles. If the core principle is capitalism and additional steps are taken to reduce its harm, I am all for it.
If your guiding principle is ‘social justice’ or ‘only good things should be built’…
