Wormhole has introduced native USDT transfers to several major blockchains, including Ethereum, Arbitrum, Base, Optimism, Polygon, BNB Chain, and Avalanche. According to Wormhole’s official blog post, this new feature leverages decentralized exchange (DEX) infrastructure provided by Uniswap v3 and PancakeSwap pools.
Native USDT transfer
The system leverages Wormhole’s cross-chain capabilities combined with the centralized liquidity pools of PancakeSwap and Uniswap v3. Key features include:
- Competitive fee rates for USDT transfers.
- Since gas-free transfers are possible on the destination chain, USDT can be moved even if the asset is not present on the receiving blockchain.
- A user-friendly interface that streamlines the transfer process with a single function call via the portal app.
architecture
Each supported blockchain has a dedicated xUSDT/USDT pool that facilitates trading between xUSDT (Wormhole USDT) and local wrapped USDT. These pools are standard Uniswap v3 or PancakeSwap pools, so liquidity providers (LPs) are free to participate and set their preferred fee structure. Most liquidity is expected to be concentrated around the median, but some LPs may choose to have different fee rates.
How it Works
For example, to transfer USDT from Optimism to Base, you would swap USDT to Wormhole xUSDT on Uniswap (Optimism), transfer xUSDT to Base, and then swap to Base native USDT on Uniswap (Base). This entire process is fast and has minimal fees. Users start with native USDT on one blockchain and end with native USDT on another blockchain, with minimal costs.
effectiveness
At launch, native-to-native USDT transfers will be available on Ethereum, Arbitrum, Base, Optimism, Polygon, BNB Chain, and Avalanche. PancakeSwap pools are active on Arbitrum, Base, and BNB Chain, while Uniswap pools are active on Optimism, Polygon, and Avalanche.
Developer Integration
Developers can integrate basic USDT transfer functionality into their applications using Wormhole Connect. The widget is accessible here and documentation is available here. More advanced integrations via the Wormhole SDK are expected soon.
