ZkSync is a layer 2 network designed to extend Ethereum, providing cheaper transactions by performing computations and storing data off-chain. Taxonomically speaking, it is classified as a subtype of layer 2 known as ZK rollup, which relies on zero-knowledge cryptography, which is considered one of the most promising new technologies in blockchain.
