MITER is collaborating with Mcity to create a digital proving ground for autonomous vehicles that leverages NVIDIA’s Omniverse Cloud Sensor RTX API to enhance AV safety testing.

In an important step toward widespread deployment of autonomous vehicles (AVs), MITER, a government-sponsored, non-profit research organization, has partnered with Mcity at the University of Michigan to develop an innovative AV verification platform. The collaboration, unveiled at the NVIDIA AI Summit in Washington, D.C., aims to improve the safety and compliance of AV technology by combining digital and physical test environments.

Strengthening autonomous vehicle testing

The joint initiative between MITER and Mcity will leverage the capabilities of the NVIDIA Omniverse Cloud Sensor RTX API to provide a comprehensive simulation environment. This platform allows developers to perform extensive testing of AVs in simulated scenarios prior to real-world deployment. This collaboration is designed to address the fragmented regulatory environment that currently presents challenges to AV implementation in various jurisdictions.

Mcity’s contributions include a 32-acre mock city that serves as a testbed for automakers and researchers. Integrating this physical facility with a digital framework gives developers access to critical AV data and simulation tools, improving their ability to test and validate AV technologies.

Addressing safety standards

A major obstacle for the AV industry is the lack of universally accepted safety standards. Existing frameworks, such as the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration’s New Car Assessment Program, fall short in evaluating the complex decision-making processes required for AVs. MITER and Mcity’s initiative aims to fill this gap by providing both digital and physical verification resources.

Sensor simulation allows developers to safely test AV responses to rare and hazardous scenarios in a virtual environment. This method allows you to replicate real-world events to evaluate AV system performance, provide quantitative evidence to regulators, and accelerate the validation process.

Fostering industry and regulatory collaboration

The Digital Proving Ground platform developed by MITER and Mcity is poised to become a national resource for AV development. This promotes the creation of industry-wide standards to provide an accessible and reliable simulation testing environment. Mcity’s simulation infrastructure is integrated with NVIDIA’s Omniverse, connecting the virtual and real worlds to enhance AV safety assurance.

This collaboration marks an important moment in the journey toward secure and scalable AV deployment. By bridging the gap between industry and regulators, MITER and Mcity are paving the way for autonomous vehicles to gain public trust and regulatory approval, bringing the future of transportation closer to reality.
