Sei Labs and Sei Foundation launch the Sei Research Initiative to address limitations of the Ethereum Virtual Machine and improve its scalability and decentralization.

Sei Labs and Sei Foundation have unveiled the Sei Research Initiative, a joint effort to address the limitations of the Ethereum Virtual Machine (EVM). This initiative seeks to explore and expand the capabilities of EVM by engaging third-party researchers, thought leaders, and external contributors.

Explore EVM limitations

EVM, a cornerstone of blockchain technology, allows the creation of decentralized applications through smart contracts written in languages such as Solidity. However, its single-threaded nature results in transaction bottlenecks, high gas fees, and slow finality times, hindering the scalability needed for mass adoption. The Sei Research Initiative aims to address these challenges through innovative approaches such as horizontal scaling.

Propose innovative solutions

Sei Labs emphasizes a first-principles approach to reimagining the EVM across storage, consensus, and execution layers. The Sei Protocol aims to significantly improve throughput and reduce transaction fees and final times by parallelizing transaction execution. This approach is expected to expand the developer design space and foster greater innovation within the EVM ecosystem.

Core principles guiding the initiative

The Sei Research Initiative is underpinned by several core principles, including continuous innovation, community-first open source collaboration, and decentralization. By adhering to open standards, this initiative seeks to provide full EVM compatibility and have a positive impact on the blockchain ecosystem.

Community Involvement and Participation

Sei Labs and Sei Foundation invite developers, researchers, and community members to participate in this open source collaboration. Opportunities include exploring Sei Protocol’s documentation and participating in grant initiatives such as the Sei Creator Fund and Japan Ecosystem Fund.

The Sei Research Initiative is an important step in addressing the current limitations of EVM, with the goal of improving scalability and decentralization to meet the needs of the growing blockchain ecosystem.
