The Hong Kong Monetary Authority (HKMA) warns against phishing messages purporting to be Bank of Communications (Hong Kong) Limited and advises people to be careful not to share sensitive information.

The Hong Kong Monetary Authority (HKMA) has issued a public warning about phishing messages falsely claiming to be from Bank of Communications (Hong Kong) Limited. This warning, published on January 24, 2025, aims to warn individuals to avoid falling victim to these scam attempts.

Phishing attempt details

According to the HKMA, these phishing instant messages have been reported to authorities and a press release has been issued warning the public. Messages often contain hyperlinks that mislead recipients into thinking they are accessing a legitimate bank website. However, these messages are designed to steal sensitive information from unsuspecting individuals.

HKMA official advisory

The HKMA emphasizes that legitimate banks will not send SMS or emails containing hyperlinks directing users to the bank’s website for transactions. Additionally, we do not request sensitive personal information, such as login passwords or one-time passwords (OTP), through phone calls, emails, or SMS containing hyperlinks.

Recommended Actions for Potential Victims

If you have inadvertently shared personal information or made a financial transaction in this phishing message, please contact the Korea Communications Bank immediately using the contact information provided in the official press release. You should also report the incident to the Hong Kong Police Crime Branch Information Center at 2860 5012.

The HKMA’s advice aims to raise public awareness and prevent further incidents of fraud. Authorities continue to closely monitor the situation and advise the public to remain alert to potential fraudulent activity.

For more information, you can check the HKMA’s official statement on the HKMA website.
