An upcoming HBO documentary aims to reveal the true identity of Satoshi Nakamoto, the pseudonymous founder of Bitcoin.
Nakamoto, famous as the anonymous inventor of Bitcoin, appears to have disappeared in December 2010. If Nakamoto still exists, the Bitcoin creator is estimated to have control, at least on paper, of 1.1 million Bitcoins, currently worth about $67 billion.
The documentary, titled “Money Electric: The Bitcoin Mystery,” will be released next Wednesday, October 9, and follows “Q: Into,” a docuseries exposing the mastermind behind the QAnon conspiracy theory. It was produced by Cullen Hoback, director of “the Storm.” . The trailer was released on Thursday.
“We’re dealing with a huge event in the movie, and I think who we end up choosing will be unexpected and cause quite a bit of controversy,” Hoback told Fast Company. “I think people are going to debate it regardless of the strength of the case we made, and that’s okay. That’s the nature of this space. We had a lot more evidence than we could ever include in the film.”
Alex Thorn, head of research at Galaxy Digital, visited X on Thursday and said he heard the HBO documentary claim Nakamoto’s real identity was Len Sassaman. Thorn also linked to a Medium post from 2021 exploring the theory that Sassaman, who committed suicide, was actually Nakamoto.
